These days, most homeowners are inclined to use Karndean flooring in their homes. Karndean flooring is a luxury vinyl planks and luxury vinyl tile brand. Their flooring is unique for its natural stone and wood-like look, and it’s made from high-quality PVC.
Some reasons why most people opt for it is because it’s easy to install and maintain. Also, the floor is comfortable and gives the room a warm feel. Not just that, but as a result of its versatile nature. The flooring can be used in any room in the home including the kitchen, and bathroom.
The later part of this post will outline the many pros of the Karndean floor. But before then, there are some common problems associated with Karndean flooring you should know. As a buyer, it’s advisable to know both the pros and cons of a product to allow you to make a better decision.
This post covers some Karndean flooring problems and possible solutions for each problem pointed out.
5 Karndean Flooring Problems
a. Karndean Flooring Easily Scratch
Most high-quality floors are scratch-resistance but obviously, they are overpriced. The Karndean floor comes with a thick top layer that protects it from scratch, but it’s not scratch-resistant. The thick layer prevents minor scratches. But when for instance, you drag a heavy object across the floor, you will see visible scuff marks.
One way to protect your Karndean flooring against scratch is to use a protective film on the floor. Using a protective film protects the floor from scuffs and scratches. If you need to drag a heavy object across the floor, place the floor protective film to line across the path before moving the object.
Also, you can opt for flooring with a coating, but it’s more expensive than ones without a coating.
The second option is to opt for flooring with weathered designs. The design makes scuff and scratch less visible.
b. Easy Discoloration
This is one common problem most customers have with the Karndean flooring. When exposed to sunlight for an extended period, the Karndean flooring fades or loses its color. This means that, if you install the Karndean floor in a room that is exposed to sunlight, over time, the floor will start to fade even with a UV-protective sealer.
One way to protect the Karndean floor from fading or discoloration is to make sure it’s not installed in a location with direct sunlight. Don’t install the flooring on your outdoor deck if it’s exposed to direct sunlight.
Also, install curtains or drapes on the windows to filter out direct sunlight.
c. Water-Resistant But Not Waterproof
The Karndean floor is water-resistant but not waterproof. Water-resistant means it can withstand exposure to water and moisture for a limited period. When the Karndean floor is exposed to water for an extended period, it will create a breeding ground for mildew and mold. In turn, the floor will deteriorate fast.
Make sure the Karndean floor is not installed in a place where it will be exposed to moisture for an extended period. It’s not advisable to use in locations like the kitchen tile or shower.
d. Floorboards Peels At The Edges
Although the Karndean floor is made from high-grade PVC which makes it last longer, you will notice signs of wear after some time. The floor starts to peel around the edges. Don’t freak out, this doesn’t happen immediately. You will likely use the floor for up to 10 years before you notice this.
Most times, the floor starts to peel when there is a build-up of dust and dirt along the edges.
There’s little you can do to prevent this. But when you notice this, remove the planks, apply glue and reinstall.
e. Floor Separates Easily/ Bouncy
Most vinyl floors are known to have this issue. When you install the Karndean floor, you may notice that it starts to bounce when you walk on them. When a floor bounces, the other part of the floor lifts when you step on one part.
Float or bounciness occurs when there is an issue with the installation or high humidity levels. This can cause the floor to crack if not addressed on time.
It’s advisable to call a professional to install the floor to avoid this issue in the future. Also, when installing the floor, make sure the subfloor is even before installing the floor. For a concrete subfloor, use a concrete grinder to level the floor. While for the wooden floor, use a sanding machine to level the subfloor before installation.
Advantages of Karndean Flooring
Now you have an idea of the problems associated with Karndean floors, it’s time to mention the advantages.
a. Easy Installation
Karndean floors are quite easy to install. Their Korlok floor collection comes with a click-lock system that makes it easy to install. Unlike other floor types you need to leave for at least 48 hours after installation, you can walk on the Karndean floor the same day.
Also, Their Looselay collection can be installed over an existing floor and recyclable.
b. It Is Water-Resistant
Karndean floors are water-resistant. This means that the floors can be exposed to moisture for a limited period without damage. This is a result of the dual plastic core layers on the Karndean floor. Note that being water-resistant is different from water-proof.
c. Karndean Floors Are Durable
Karndean floors are durable and can withstand pressure and high foot traffic. It is because the floorboards have dual PVC backing layers. Also, the plans have thick top layers that protect against scuff and scratch. The average lifespan of any Karndean floor is five to ten years. It makes it a better option than other brands with just a single plastic layer and no thin top layers.
d. Karndean Floors Are Eco-friendly
Karndean floors are made from eco-friendly materials. The product has been certified by different environmental organizations to be an eco-friendly product. Unlike other Vinyl floorings that release high-volume toxic gases to the environment, Karndean has very low-volume toxic gases.
e. Low-Maintenance Flooring
Maintaining the Karndean floor is easy and inexpensive. The surface layer of the Karndean floor has been treated to be bacteria-free. You don’t have to use disinfectants to clean the floor. All you need is to clean the floor using a ph-neutral floor cleaning product and mop to maintain.
Most of the problems associated with the Karndean flooring occur before and during its installation. If you take care to prepare the sub-surface and install the floor the right way, you will have little or no issue with it. Also, proper maintenance is very essential to make the floor last longer.
