Scratches On Your Vinyl Floor
Vinyl flooring is popular for its provision of a cost-effective yet luxurious and fashionable for both homes and offices. However, over time it is quite common for it to get scratches on it, from daily wear and tear. So how do we maintain its original shiny look?
Taking care of this situation is easier than you thought. It is not time-consuming and most important of all, it costs very little. The materials needed to make these scratches non-existent. Thus giving it back its shine are very accessible and easy to get. They include dish detergent, sandpaper car wax, and a clean cloth or rag. So now let’s put you through the entire restoration process.
Step To Deal With Scratches
There are three steps to make the restoration complete: cleaning the floor, sanding the floor, and waxing the floor.
1. Cleaning The Floor
This step may seem unnecessary but is of big importance to the entire process. Deep cleaning of the floor ensures that surface dirt does not hamper the progress of the repair. Ensure to add a quarter of detergent to a bucket of warm water to use for a proper clean-up, after all, dirt being stuck in the scratches will hinder the entire process. Ensure that the floor is dry before moving onto the next step.
2. Sanding The Floor
The trick to doing this properly is by rubbing it on the floor, in the same direction as the scratches. Using light strokes continue this until the scratches are gone, be careful not to add much pressure while sanding, otherwise, the scarring of the floor will be permanent.
Use one of your fingers to ensure that the treated area is as smooth as the rest of the floor. After which, wash the floor with water and detergent and clean up all the dust left behind by the sandpaper.
If the scratch is deep, ensure to smooth the surrounding area for an even surface. Try as much as possible to avoid destroying the finish in the process, if that happens, the only choice is to replace it with new flooring.
3. Waxing the Floor
This last stage just requires the use of car wax. This restores the shine of the flooring, in order words, it is a buffing agent. Using a clean rag, work the wax into the newly smoothened area in a circular motion, this is the best way to get a thorough finish. Ensure to clean off excess wax that may be left behind.
Correcting these minor defects is fun and all but prevention is always best, the use of carpet rugs minimizes the chances of having to go through this corrective maintenance.
Also, the use of felt or silicone floor protectors beneath wooden furniture will eliminate this incidence. Also, check out for other factors that may have caused that scratch and avoid having to go through all that inconvenience again.
Discolored Vinyl Flooring
Discoloration of vinyl flooring is an inevitable phenomenon; it is impossible to halt but easier to slow down, moisture is the color culprit. Thus the main obstacle you can muster up is simply keeping the surface dry as much as possible. Mud, oily stains and, tea are the most common accelerants of discoloration apart from water.
Sitting and dining room areas are easier to maintain compared to the bathroom, this area is exposed to moisture daily at least. Keeping it dry once in a while as much as possible is the best one can manage, although a discolored vinyl flooring in the bathroom can be quite a sore sight, most times even unhygienic.
Steps To Remove Discoloration on Vinyl Flooring
It is true that discoloration can’t be stopped completely, however, rather than accepting this fate, you may decide to restore it to its color or near the original. There are different ways of carrying out this restoration, depending on what you might want to go with. There might be no known chemical specifically made for this purpose, but there are a few household items that can handle the job, though the best of all is baking soda. These are the steps to follow through with this household item;
a. The first thing to do is to ensure that the entire area is clean, not just the discolored portion but the whole area needs to be cleaned thoroughly, either by sweeping or vacuuming. Carpets need to be kept aside, as the area needs to be bare as well.
b. Next is to wet the discolored portion and the immediate surrounding area with just enough water. Do not use too much, to avoid a very slippery surface, and be safety conscious.
c. It is now time to use the restoration agent, sprinkle the baking powder on only the affected areas. You can apply lemon juice as well, it will boost the effectiveness of the whole process. Allow it to stay on the surface for at least fifteen minutes. Do not allow to stay longer else you will end up making the discoloration even worse up to the point of getting a replacement.
d. Once the period has elapsed, wipe off with a microfiber cloth, you may mop the agents away but it has to be done with a microfiber mop. Using other materials especially scrub pads will leave scratches due to the rough texture of the powder.
As said earlier there are other household agents to use but it is not advisable due to the delicate nature of the floor. Bleach might work to some extent but will need to be diluted to be considered safe for the process, either way it is not a chance worth taking.
Another is alcohol, the effectiveness is low compared to the aforementioned item, aside from that due to its volatility, it also needs dilution, which cuts its effectiveness to almost zero plus it will be used in large quantities, which makes it expensive.
Another method is the use of sunlight, this natural method is best preferred to alcohol and bleach. It is quite easy to pull off at no cost at all. It is noteworthy that sunlight also being responsible for color fading can be manipulated to serve the opposite purpose.
All you need to do is to evenly expose the entire area to sunlight, make sure that the windows are opened with the rugs removed away from the place. It is not as effective as baking soda so do not give high expectations for this method.
