Polyurethane is one of the popular hardwood floors finishes out there. It comes in two types, water-based and oil-based polyurethane. The floor coating protects hardwood floors from moisture, damages and increases the aesthetic value of the flooring. Sadly, it doesn’t protect your hardwood floors against scuff marks. Some of the things that cause scuff marks on the hardwood floor include, a scratch from heavy furniture and shoe marks.
Removing scuff marks from polyurethane hardwood floors is easy as long as you have the right materials to handle it. We have outlined three methods in this post to help you. None of the methods involves the use of heavy-duty solvents. So you don’t have to worry about damaging your floor in the process.
Method 1: Use Baking Soda to Remove Marks
Baking soda comes in handy to remove scuff marks off any floor in general. All you need to do is to prepare the baking soda mixture and use it to scrub the affected area. This method works best if the polyurethane is heavily scuffed. There are two ways to go about this method.
Prepare the baking soda mixture by mixing 2 tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of warm water. Mix the two until you get a paste. Get a soft cloth, dab some soda paste on the cloth, and scrub the affected area with it. When you are done cleaning, wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove the excess paste. Finally, wipe with a dry cloth.
Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on the affected area. Use a damp cloth and buff the affected area until the scuff is no longer visible. Wipe with another cloth to finish the process.
Method 2: Soft Clean the Affected Area
Before you start cleaning, remove debris and dirt that may cause a further scratch on the floor. Dip a damp cloth inside a hardwood detergent and clean the affected area. To have the desired effect, you have to scrub the area vigorously. After cleaning, wipe with a dry cloth.
Method 3: Clean With A Tennis Ball
Apply this method if the area with the scuff mark is large or tough. Clean the affected area with a damp cloth and wipe clean with another dry cloth. Get a tennis ball and rub firmly in the affected areas. To avoid hurting yourself, it is best to cut the tennis ball and hold it with a broom instead of in your hand. Rub until the scuff mark is gone.
Method 4: Use an Eraser
A pencil eraser is also effective in the removal of scuff marks. But you have to apply the right pressure when scrubbing to avoid further damage. This should be your last option. For the process, get a pencil eraser, rub firmly until you remove the scuff marks. Clean up the remaining eraser and wipe the area with a dry cloth.
